EEN GEZAMENLIJKE EXPOSITIE VAN

FEDERICO MAZZA (ROME, IT)
Het werk van de in Zaandijk wonende kunstenaar Joanne Zegers is zeer verbonden met de plek waar zij haar atelier heeft. Maar de wereld is groter: Zij vroeg zich af hoe zij in contact kon komen met andere kunstenaars. Instagram bleek een goede plek om gelijkgestemden van over de hele wereld te ontmoeten. Vorig jaar heeft zij de Amerikaanse fotograaf Kendra Komppa uitgenodigd om te komen exposeren in Het Weefhuis en dat was een bijzondere, geslaagde ervaring.
Dit jaar heeft zij de uit Rome afkomstige schilder en grafisch ontwerper Federico Mazza bereid gevonden om samen te exposeren. Ook nu hebben de kunstenaars elkaar via internet ontmoet en kennen elkaar niet persoonlijk: het is een connectie die puur met beelden tot stand is gekomen vanuit de interesse in elkaars werk. Mazza was gelijk enthousiast toen hij de expositieruimte zag; het werk van Zegers kende hij al via Instagram. Hij herkende de verwantschap in de schilderijen en twijfelde geen moment om zijn werk te komen brengen vanuit Italië. ‘Het idee om onze schilderijen naast elkaar te hangen, is van grote waarde: we kijken allemaal op internet naar afbeeldingen, maar niets verslaat de kracht van de werkelijkheid’.
Zij delen het landschap als onderwerp in hun kunstwerken. Federico merkt op dat er door tijdgebrek weinig ‘pure observatie’ van het landschap plaatsvindt en ziet de kleinste nuances in onscherpte. Joanne houdt zich vooral bezig met de onbereikbaarheid van de verte en de nabijheid van de leegte. Beiden hebben een diepe interesse in wat ruimte en licht betekenen en hoe zij elkaar beïnvloeden.
De expositie zal plaatsvinden in Het Weefhuis in het weekend van 14 en 15 juli van 12 tot 17 uur. Locatie: Lagedijk 39, 1544 BB in Zaandijk. De kunstenaars zullen aanwezig zijn. “Ik heb niets te zeggen en ik zeg het…”
Dit is een citaat van John Cage waar ik erg van hou. Wanneer ik mezelf vraag waarom ik schilder dan weet ik het antwoord niet. Ik weet alleen dat ik het moet doen. Schilderen geeft me hoop op vrijheid, het biedt mogelijkheden waar eerder niets was.
Al sinds mijn jonge jaren ben ik van nature goed in tekenen. Maar door de Duitse schilder Gerhard Richter begreep ik dat dat niet genoeg was. Hij zei in ‘De dagelijkse praktijk van het schilderen’: “Het feit van weten hoe te schilderen is geen goede reden om het te blijven doen”.
In mijn werk komt de gedachte tot uitdrukking dat in dit leven (of althans in mijn innerlijke leven) de tijd beperkt is. Alles is zo snel, steeds vluchtiger en oppervlakkiger. In mijn schilderijen is deze vluchtigheid een belangrijk onderwerp: het gebrek aan tijd voor de pure observatie van het landschap. Ik denk dat we ons niet bewust zijn van hoe vaag het zicht op alles is. Ik probeer daarom de voorgrond en de achtergrond onscherp te maken zodat alles even belangrijk is, homogeen lijkt te worden. De onzekerheid van het eindresultaat is een zekere constante in mijn manier van schilderen; ik weet niet wat het eindresultaat zal zijn. Mist en grijsheid fascineren mij omdat je je van alles kunt voorstellen binnen die vaagheid. Ik hou ook van het mysterieuze van bossen en de charme van het onduidelijke.
Voor sommige werken besteed ik veel meer tijd aan het voorbereiden van de drager (canvas of hout) dan aan het schilderen zelf. In het algemeen schilder ik “alla prima” (nat-in-nat), in de overtuiging dat het belangrijk is om te proberen de creatie van een schilderij zoveel mogelijk te laten samenvallen met de eerste impressie van het werk. Daardoor word ik gedwongen snel te werken.

Als schilder won hij in 2013 de “Premio città di Nova Milanese – Internationale Bice Bugatti Segantini XXIV editie”. Hij werd geselecteerd en opgenomen in verschillende hedendaagse kunstpublicaties zoals de “Celeste Prize (Shortlist 2009), Premio Lissone (Finalist 2010) ) en Combat Prize (Shortlist 2011.)
De meest recente tentoonstellingen zijn ‘Through, open’ solo-shows, samengesteld door Luca Arnaudo (Artsinergy, Rome, 2011) en ‘Arte a Sud’ groepstentoonstelling, samengesteld door Francesca Londino en Settimio Ferrari (Verschillende locaties, Isca sullo Ionio – Catanzaro, 2011).
Als grafisch ontwerper is hij gespecialiseerd in het ontwerpen van filmaffiches en huisstijlen.

Toen iemand mij eens vroeg wat ik toch met ‘die overkant’ had -een term die te vinden is op mijn website- had ik de neiging om te zeggen: dat zie je toch? Maar ik besefte op tijd dat wat voor mij vanzelfsprekend is, voor anderen dat niet zo is. Ik ben geboren aan de Zaan, opgegroeid aan haar oevers. Wat voor mij de overkant is, is niet de andere kant van de straat, maar de andere kant van het water. Een overkant is verder weg, veranderlijk, onbereikbaar: er zit ruimte en licht tussen mij en die overkant en ik zal nooit precies weten wat daar gebeurt.
Ondertussen is in de loop van meer dan 15 jaar de horizon een krachtige metafoor geworden voor dat gevoel van vertrouwdheid, verlangen en onbereikbaarheid. Op de horizon kan ik spelen met alle registers die als schilder tot mijn beschikking heb: een kleine opening naar de verte of een grandioze lichtval die naar je toe komt.
Een schilderij is voor mij als een herinnering die nooit van mij is geweest. Er zit iets in wat ik bijna afstandelijk kan noemen, het beweegt als het ware vanzelf naar iets toe. Het is net als met het landschap: je kan alleen maar onderdeel zijn van alles en kijken naar de regen, de kleur, de leegte en het licht en je verwonderen over die verandering die nooit ophoudt.
Exposities en werk
Joanne Zegers (1970, Zaandam) is beeldend kunstenaar en kunstdocent. Zij is zelfstandig werkend als schilder en lesgevende sinds 1993.
Haar eerste expositie in 1994 vond plaats in het Kunstcentrum te Zaandam samen met Riet Deerenberg en Caius Spronken. Na vele jaren exposeren in de Zaanstreek en omgeving heeft zij nu ook een galerie in Vorden en organiseert zij haar eigen exposities in het Weefhuis.
In 2008 won zij samen met Marcel Fraij de Cultuurprijs Zaanstad, nadat zij jaren voorzitter is geweest van Kunstenaars Platform ‘Tengel’.

A collaborate exhibition of
Joanne Zegers (Zaandijk, Netherlands) and
Federico Mazza (Rome, Italy)
Artist Joanne Zegers lives and works in Zaandijk (The Netherlands). Her paintings have a strong connection with her environment. But her world does not end there; she felt the need to reach out to artists in different parts of the world. It turns out that Instagram is a great way to meet like-minded people from all over the globe. Last year she came in contact with American photographer Kendra Komppa and invited her to come and join her in an exhibition at Het Weefhuis,(Zaandijk). This was both an extraordinary and successful experience.
This year painter and graphic designer Federico Mazza from Rome is joining her in exhibiting their paintings. The artists have only met through the internet and do not know each other personally. It is a connection that has come about purely from images and a mutual interest in each other’s work. Mazza already knew Zegers’ work through Instagram and right away recognized the kinship in their paintings. When offered to exhibit together, he saw the exhibition space and was excited to bring his work over from Italy. ‘The idea of hanging our paintings next to each other is of great value: we all look at images on the internet, but nothing beats the power of reality’. In addition, Het Weefhuis is a good place to show the work in all its nuances to a broadly interested audience.
With both artists the landscape as a subject dominates their art. Federico notes that there is little ‘pure observation’ of the landscape due to lack of time and sees the smallest nuances in a blur. Joanne is predominantly interested in the unattainable distant space and the proximity of the void. Both have a deep interest in what space and light mean and how these entities influence each other.

When someone once asked me, why I was so interested in ‘the other side’, a phrase used to clarify my work on my website, I realized that what was so obvious to me was not so apparent to others. Born and raised on the banks of the stream the Zaan, the other side represented not the other side of the street but the opposite site of the water. The other site of the water is far away, ever changing, unattainable. There is space and light between me and it and I will never know for sure what goes on there.
In the meantime over the course of 15 years or more the other side, the horizon, has become a metaphor for a sense of familiarity, longing and unattainability. The horizon gives me the opportunity to play out all options I have available to me as an artist; a narrow window to distant space or a magnificent splash of light coming towards me.
A painting to me is like a memory that was never mine. There is something about my paintings that I could almost call disconnected, they move out of their own momentum. As like with a landscape; you can be a part of it all, watch the rain, the colors, the emptiness and the light, and marvel about this never ending change.

Joanne Zegers (1970, Zaandam) is a visual artist and art teacher. She has been working independently as a painter and teacher since 1993.
Her first exhibition in 1994 took place at the Art Center in Zaandam together with Riet Deerenberg and Caius Spronken. After many years of exhibiting in the Zaanstreek and surroundings her paintings now also can be seen in gallery De Burgerij in Vorden. She regularly organizes her own exhibitions in Het Weefhuis.
In 2008 she won the Culture Prize Zaanstad together with Marcel Fraij, after having been president of Artists Platform ‘Tengel’ for several years.

“I have nothing to say and I am saying it…”
This is a quote from John Cage that I really love. When I ask myself why I paint, I do not know the answer. I only know that I have to do it. Painting gives me hope of freedom, it offers possibilities where at first there was nothing.
I have been drawing since I was young. But I understood that that was not enough, when I read something the German painter Gerhard Richter said in ‘The daily practice of painting’: “The fact of knowing how to paint is not a good reason to keep doing it”.
In my work the idea is expressed that in this life (or at least in my inner life) time is limited. Everything is so fast, increasingly volatile and superficial. In my paintings, this volatility is an important subject: the lack of time for the pure observation of the landscape.
I think we are not aware of how blurred our view of everything is. I therefore try to blur the foreground and the background so that everything is equally important: it appears to be homogeneous. As a result, there is a certain uncertainty in my way of painting: I do not know what the end result will be. The uncertainty of the end result is a certain constant in my way of painting.
Mist and grayness fascinate me, because you can imagine everything within that vagueness. I also like the mysteriousness of forests and the charm of the unclear.
For some works, I spend much more time preparing the surface (canvas or wood) than on painting itself. In general, I paint “alla prima” (wet-in-wet), convinced that it is important to try to let the creation of a painting coincide as much as possible with the first impression of the work. As a result, I am forced to work quickly.
